Why Direct Mail Still Gets Opened

Letter tiles spelling out direct mail

It's easy to assume that direct mail is a thing of the past. After all, we do almost everything online now.

But the numbers tell a different story. While email averages around a 10 to 12 percent open rate, direct mail is seeing around a 90 percent open rate. That's not a small difference. That's a game changer.

The mailbox is a quieter place

Think about how you check your email. You skim subject lines, delete in bulk and archive anything that looks like marketing. Now think about how you check your mailbox. You pick up each piece, look at it and decide what to do with it.

That moment of attention is exactly what most marketing is missing.

Intentional beats loud

The businesses that grow the strongest aren't the loudest. They're the most remembered. Direct mail works best when it isn't a blast, but a thoughtful touchpoint:

  • A birthday card that arrives on the right day
  • A note after a big milestone
  • A small gift that says "I was thinking of you"

Direct mail isn't old-fashioned. It's intentional. And when it's done strategically, it works.
